The CHPH believes in communal health and development. We have multiple partnerships, projects and programs aimed at improving health for all members of our community. Please view them below:

The University of Windsor’s Department of Kinesiology’s APEX Research Group supports healthy living of people with disabilities (autism spectrum and intellectual disability (ASD-ID) through physical activity. APEX programs improve fitness and motor skills of adults with ASD-ID, while teaching proper exercise techniques safely. APEX programming has been positively evaluated by participants and support staff, identified as providing confidence skills to engage in an active lifestyle, resulting in continued exercise engagement. The impact of this program is extended and sustained through knowledge transferred by way of an APEX manual, website, workshops/webinars and  videos. This program highlights a model of a sustained community-based health program for people with developmental disabilities.

Adapted Physical Exercise (APEX)

RENEW stands for Resources, Education, Nutrition, Exercise, Wellness and is run by Windsor Regional Hospital’s cancer program and the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Human Kinetics. In the RENEW Exercise Program, participants work with specially trained fitness instructors to help them regain strength and confidence. Sessions are held in the Toldo Lancer Centre.

Thanks to the generous support of the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation and its donors, participants pay a subsidized fee of $40 for their first 10-week session. Participants attend two, 60-minute exercise sessions each week. Classes include light to moderate strengthening and toning exercises. Classes are led by specially trained instructors who have received Cancer and Exercise Training for Health Professionals certification from THRIVE Health Services (University of Calgary). Exercises are modified to allow participants to work at their own pace and meet their personal goals.

RENEW - Exercise Program

The UWorkItOut UWin program is a collaborative effort between the Department of Kinesiology’s SPPARC (Sport Psychology & Physical Activity Research Collaborative) Lab, the CHPH, and UWindsor’s Student Counselling Centre. The program helps low-risk sedentary students improve their mental health, increase their participation in physical activity, and foster positive lifestyle changes. Each participant is paired with a dedicated personal trainer that guides them through exercises and advises them on implementing positive lifestyle changes. Additionally, each participant is given a counselling session every week. The program has been shown to decrease feelings of anxiety and depression in participants, and increase their confidence, motivation, and coping abilities.
